Trend Atelier: Macro Trend Forecast “Modesty Solutions” AW 2016/17

Published

Seeking Balance

Raindrops carpet collection by Giorgia Zanellato - Painter Potter Poet collection by Saskia Roberts - Studio Fludd Poor tools - A.G. Nauta Couture – Cucula chair project

Intentionally imperfect multi-disciplinary craft utilises man-made and natural materials to convey moments of calm, in a need and desire to find balance. Designers downsize objects to their fundamental functionalities and look into essential materials, exposing them in their raw beauty for a rugged and romantic aesthetic.
Nostalgia for a past era delves into utility references from the Great Depression and the post war 1940s and are given a nowadays touch through material and finish.

"Destitute pea pickers in California; a 32 year old mother of seven children. February 1936.” - A.G. Nauta Couture - Nadav Kander: Chongqing XI Chongqing Municipality (2007) – Spartan shop - Rebecca Newman photography

A sentimental narrative sees designers referencing a more spartan era post WWII when we had limited resources, blending military and utility inspirations with raw and repair concepts. But whilst this trend looks to the past in stylistic ways, it’s a very positive and forward-looking direction providing ingenuous solutions.

Mend and Make Do

SS15 Raun LaRose - Ring by Stas Kauska – Woolings shoes

With a growing interest in customization and the uniqueness of product, consumers seek a connection and are stepping away from mass production towards personalization. We look at items that appear unstable and pasted together haphazardly, and update utilitarian style classics.

Anya Hindmarch workshop London – Maker Fair – Make magazine – Selfridges “Make it” event - Makerversity

The Maker Movement plays a key role in Modesty solutions, as we seek grassroots ways of inventing products and repairing every day objects.
This eco-system of makers has been growing from strength to strength for several years and has now caught the attention of large fashion industry and retail players.

Man & Nature Synergy

Burak Cakmak - With The Ocean Cleanup project - Reuse Laundry Water Recycler by Designer Angela Granados – Anna Bornhold Chloé Prize at Hyères 2015

Young graduates and educational institutions lead the change by putting sustainability at the forefront of what they consider the next generation needs to harness. Some of the biggest concerns that are coming through for these young graduates are around creating solutions to save water, clean the Ocean and eradicate throwaway culture.

AMMA Studio - Archiproba renovates the Central Telegraph building in Moscow - Nendo molds bi-color washi lamp - The Echaus & Latta collabroation of shoes

Objects, interiors and architecture embrace binary tensions between man-made and natural materials, with a colour palette ranging from saccharine to earthy. Unconventional material combinations are investigated to disturb traditional form and function paradigms. This also refers to “Brutalism” and stripping designs and spaces back to their industrial rawness.
