Thierry Mugler exhibition to open in Montreal

Published
Oct 30, 2017

An exhibition on French designer Thierry Mugler is slated to open at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) in February 2019.

Baptized 'Thierry Mugler: Creatures of Haute Couture', the exhibition will explore the different artistries of Thierry Mugler especially through his ready-to-wear and haute couture creations, as well as his work as a director, photographer and perfumer. Items on display will include more than 130 outfits, created between 1973 and 2001, as well as many unseen archive documents and photos by artists and photographers.

“The work of Thierry Mugler is as distinctive as it is avant-garde. It has an architectural, hyper- feminized style that sublimes the curves of the femme fatale. This creator knows how to distinguish himself through constant innovation and audacious silhouettes that have marked an era, and found a place in the history of fashion. His singular style, a kind of futurist version of New Look with a touch of fantasy and fetishism, is still a powerful influence on today’s generation of couturiers,” explained Thierry-Maxime Loriot, exhibition curator.

Thierry Mugler has dressed celebrities such as Diana Ross, David Bowie, Lady Gaga, Liza Minelli and Céline Dion. He has equally created costumes for Mylène Farmer and Beyoncé for their tours and videos.

The MMFA has previously curated major exhibitions in the world of high fashion. Most recently, haute couture bridal creations by Jean Paul Gaultier were highlighted in an exhibit dubbed 'Love is Love: Wedding Bliss for all à la Jean Paul Gaultier'.

Thierry Mugler said that the offer from the MMFA was one he could not refuse.

“I am not a person who dwells in the past, but the MMFA, through Nathalie Bondil, was the first to propose me to stage my creations and imagine together a free, global and reinvented artistic vision. How could I refuse?”
