Ozwald Boateng creates new look for British Airways staff

British Airways has unveiled new Ozwald Boateng-designed uniforms for the airline’s 30,000 staff.

Initially announced in September 2018, but delayed due to the pandemic, the line includes a jumpsuit option for female cabin crew – an industry first, claims BA.

There are also more traditional tailored three-piece suits for men and dress, skirt and trouser outfits for women, together with tunic and hijab options.

Launching in the summer for frontline staff, it replaces the near-20-year-old range designed by Julien Macdonald. Outfits for ground staff and handlers will also be introduced in the spring.

Boateng’s uniforms feature an airwave pattern used on the jackets, T-shirts, buttons and ties that BA said was inspired by the movement of air over an aircraft wing as well as a variation of the carrier’s speed marque on the jacquard fabric of all tailored garments.

BA said 90% of the uniforms were made made from sustainable fabrics including recycled polyester and cotton from manufacturers signed up to the Better Cotton initiative. 

The launch of the new look carries on a long tradition of upscale designers creating airline uniforms, including Pierre Cardin’s designs for Olympic Airways, and Dior’s for Air France back in the 1960s.
