Nicolas Ghesquière takes stand against Donald Trump

The picture of Donald Trump alongside the boss of French luxury group LVMH, Bernard Arnault, who was all smiles, taken at last Thursday’s inauguration of a Louis Vuitton production site in Texas, has circulated worldwide. Three days later, on Sunday, the creative director for women's ready-to-wear of Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquière, reacted on his Instagram account by taking a clear stand against the president of the USA.

Beneath an image of the cover of 1980s hit single ‘High Energy’ by African-American singer Evelyn Thomas, Ghesquière stated he is “standing against any political action. I am a fashion designer refusing this association,” meaning one between Louis Vuitton and Donald Trump. He also added to the message two very explicit hashtags: #Trumpisajoke and #homophobia.

A tough stance by Ghesquière, who has never concealed his homosexuality, the more so as he holds a strategic position, with related high media exposure, within the Louis Vuitton galaxy. Several fashion industry personalities, among them the creative director of Paco Rabanne, Julien Dossena, have publicly endorsed Ghesquière's post.

Trump’s highly publicised visit to the Texas factory, together with the general manager of Louis Vuitton, Michael Burke, his Rimowa counterpart, Alexandre Arnault, and the US president’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, kicked off a fiery debate on social media in the last few days.

For the time being, Louis Vuitton has not issued any comment about its star designer's statement.
