New York Fashion Week does barefaced beauty with a twist

New York does polished beauty better than anywhere else, and the city maintained its reputation during the Fall/Winter 2018 catwalk shows this week.

Natural makeup was a recurring theme at NYFW this February - AFP

Despite a handful of brands succumbing to bold colors and lashings of glitter, it was natural, elegant makeup that turned out to be one of the main Fashion Week trends. All-American heritage brands led the way, with Ralph Lauren championing that timeless beauty staple: the fresh-faced glow. Natural, sunkissed beauty was the basis of the brand's Spring 2018 look, with makeup artist Tom Pecheux creating a dewy, healthy-looking complexion, subtly enhanced with blusher and highlighter.

Another US brand opting for the squeaky clean look was Calvin Klein, whose quirky and eccentric accessories contrasted with the models' barefaced complexions, matte lips and neatly groomed brows.

The natural look was given a subtle twist at Prabal Gurung, where a light, nude eyeshadow and coral blush were paired with 1990s-style hair accessories for a preppy, collegiate look.

At Hugo Boss, glossy lips and a light wash of pastel-hued eyeshadow resulted in an ethereal aesthetic, whereas heritage brand Coach took a grungier approach, adding in a smudge of black eyeliner into the mix. Textured hair complemented the slightly disheveled vibe.
