London College of Fashion links with Cartoon Network on Powerpuff Girls style

Published
Feb 14, 2019

Industry link-ups are hugely important to fashion design students and the London College of Fashion, UAL, is working with Cartoon Network on a competition to “inspire future generations of fashion designers” via a challenge to create an AW19 look inspired by the Powerpuff Girls.

The Powerpuff Girls are the inspiration for a competition partnership between Cartoon Network and The London College of Fashion

The looks are being showcased at an event on the first day of London Fashion Week that will also see a judging panel selecting the winning designs.

It's a first-time link with Cartoon Network for the college and with yesterday's unveiling of the new Lego fashion collection highlighting how importance licensed products is to today's industry, it's a significant link too.

The competition has been open to final-year students with 15 groups made up of between two and three undergraduates creating an item that “embodies female empowerment while capturing the key trends and elements of the AW19 season.”

A shortlist of eight groups has been chosen to have their garments manufactured and the pieces are being shown on Friday at Somerset House.

Judges include Jessica Saunders, who is Programme Director for the Fashion Programme in the School of Design and Technology at LCF, and Leila Loumi, International Licensing Director, Softlines, Health & Beauty, at Cartoon Network Enterprises. The first, second and third-placed designs will see the groups sharing cash prizes.

Cartoon network has been proactive at forging links with the fashion industry and has previously seen The Powerpuff Girls’ look being interpreted by Moschino, Fyodor Golan, Katie Eary and Sabrina Pilewicz.

This new competition comes as part of the marketing strategy for the property’s all-new, reimagined animated series that also has an accompanying trend-led licensing programme.
