John Varvatos launches Led Zeppelin collection as fashion's music links grow

Legendary British rock band led Zeppelin has linked up with John Varvatos for an exclusive capsule collection to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the band’s first album in 1969.

The collection evokes “the band's innovative aesthetic intertwined with John Varvatos' penchant for detail and craftsmanship,” we’re told.

It’s being described as a first-of-its-kind collaboration but actually reflects an increasing link between the music and fashion industries in recent years. More and more tour costumes are designed by both designer and mass-market brands and are used as major marketing events by those brands. Witness the costumes Guess created for Jennifer Lopez’s It’s My Party tour this spring.

And commemorative products beyond the usual run of fan merchandise are also proving popular.

Selfridges dedicated a space in 2017 for products linked to the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album and subsequently also worked with The Rolling Stones for merchandise around the brand’s last world tour. That saw the band taking over many of the department store’s windows and its key Corner Shop space.

Meanwhile, the Led Zeppelin products’ unveiling comes with imagery shot by photographer and director Mark Seliger, featuring Miles McMillan.

Varvatos said the collaboration “resulted in a set of enlivened styles geared for today. Each piece channels Led Zeppelin's sonic ethos, from their signature iconography to their boundary-pushing rebel attitude.”

"Working with Led Zeppelin on this collaboration is a dream come true. Their music and style has had a huge influence on me," the designer added.

It’s not the first connection forged between the designer and band members with guitarist Jimmy Page saying: “Having had the great pleasure to work with John personally on numerous collaborations in the past including my book, the Yardbirds, and the John Varvatos Spring 2013 ad campaign with Gary Clark Jr…I'm pleased that there is now a Led Zeppelin collection. I was really impressed with how everything came out.”

It’s available online at johnvarvatos.com/ledzeppelin, at John Varvatos boutiques high-end speciality stores internationally.
