JD Sports ended 2017 with a total of 52 stores in Spain and Italy, and plans to continue growing in the Iberian Peninsula by opening of at least 15 new sites this year.

JD Sports continues to grow in Spain and Portugal - JD Sports

Since launching in Spain in 2011, JD Sports has kept growing. The brand’s expansion plan will see the majority of its new stores open in the region’s leading shopping centres, according to its country manager for Spain, David Segarra.

The Spanish and Portuguese branch expects to have annual revenue of 70 million euros ($84m, £62m) in 2017, with the number expected to rise to 90 million euros ($108m, £79m) this year.

The store opening plan generated more than 400 new jobs in the region during the year, doubling the number of jobs it created in 2016.

According to Segarra, JD Sports’s plan is to continue to invest in its expansion in Spain and Portugal. In the latter, the sportswear company opened two new stores in 2017, taking its total number of stores in Portugal to 12.

JD Sports has also a strong presence in several European countries such as France (where it has 55 stores including 15 newly launched), Germany (with 46 stores including 5 launched in 2017), the Netherlands (where it has 25 stores and 5 new locations) and Italy (with 20 stores including 14 new spaces).

In the UK, JD Sports has a total of 366 stores. “JD Sport’s Manchester headquarters breathes heritage and the history of the brands that lead the sector. This allows us to create the unique product stores which our customers like so much,” said David Segarra.

The British retail chain will close its 2017-18 financial year at the end of January. It posted revenue of £1.36 billion in the first half of the year, up 41% on the same period last year.
