Lionel Messi, the FC Barcelona football player, is making the jump to being a fashion designer. The football player has launched a premium clothing label for men, which was presented last week at Santa Eulalia, a leading multi-brand retailer in Barcelona.

His namesake Messi brand, with its range of t-shirts, sweatshirts, polo shirts and trousers, is available on the new ecommerce website TheMessiStore.com - and new products will drop each week. To celebrate its launch, the collection will also be on sale at Santa Eulalia’s flagship store and online for a month.

“I like to explore different areas that are of interest beyond sport. I always try to take advantage of every opportunity to be part of something new and exciting, so the launch of my own fashion brand is something I really wanted to do, and I hope people enjoy it as much as I do,” the Argentine football player said.

His sister Maria Sol Messi has been appointed as brand manager, and Ginny Hilfiger, Tommy Hilfiger’s sister, will act as creative director. She said: “Our goal is to remain true to Leo and push the boundaries of what it means to be a world-renowned football icon and an athlete who serves as inspiration on and off the field, with a cool and classic fashion style. Our designs will be spontaneous and affordable for everybody.”

As announced in May, when the football player revealed he was working on launching his own fashion label, Messi has partnered with MGO for his fashion debut.

RICHARD JAMES COLLABORATION

On Thursday Messi also unveiled a collaboration with Richard James, a contemporary menswear brand with links to London’s Savile Row.

“Ginny Hilfiger has worked with Sean Dixon (founder and CEO of the company) and Toby Lamb (creative director) to create a collection with the renowned British tailor. The collection represents a new generation of Savile Row tailors,” he said in a press release.

The Richard James x Messi collaboration will launch exclusively with Santa Eulalia.
