A few days after Karl Lagerfeld passed away on February 19, rumours were rife as to the German designer’s successor at his eponymous Karl Lagerfeld label. Following a statement by Pier Paolo Righi, CEO of Karl Lagerfeld, to German magazine TextilWirtschaftFashionNetwork.com mulled over the future role of the latest creative who collaborated with the label, former Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld. Righi said at the time that "Karl recently included his long-time companion and fashion expert, Carine Roitfeld, in our brand's creative process."

It is now official that Roitfeld has been formally appointed as style adviser to Karl Lagerfeld, a role she will be active in for the next three seasons. The first collection Roitfeld will be working on is Spring/Summer 2020. Karl Lagerfeld himself had already started to think creatively about the collection, choosing the Bauhaus style as its leitmotif.

“I am honoured and grateful for having had the opportunity to work with Karl for so many years (…) He is forever a legend, and he redefined the meaning of fashion, photography and stardom. It is an honour to collaborate as style adviser with the label bearing his name, to disseminate his signature vision in the course of the next three seasons,” said Roitfeld. In September, she will present a collection she previously co-designed with Lagerfeld, called ‘The Edit’.

Karl Lagerfeld’s CEO Righi said: “We already have a creative team appointed by [Lagerfeld], led by Creative Director Hun Kim, who was picked by Karl Lagerfeld himself. With the talent of Carine Roitfeld as style adviser, we will celebrate Karl’s iconic design aesthetic and keep it alive.”

The label underlined the work of Hun Kim, who has been designing the collections since 2015, and who said: “Collaboration was at the heart of Karl’s work ethic and we will continue to embrace this spirit as our way of working together. As a team, we will honour the boundless creative vision of Karl Lagerfeld.”
