Benefit co-founder Jean Ann Ford passed away from cancer on January 17, at age 71.

"It is with great sadness we share that our beloved co-founder, Jean Ann Ford, has passed away," the cosmetics company wrote in an Instagram post. "Jean leaves behind a makeup dynasty, a legacy of creativity, and the belief that 'Laughter is the Best Cosmetic!' Jean’s daughters [Maggie Ford Danielson] and [Annie Ford Danielson], know that their mother’s sharp creativity and bad ass spirit will live on in Benefit customers around the world."

Both of Ford's daughters serve as Benefit chief beauty ambassadors.

Ford founded Benefit with her sister, Jane, in 1976, and the pair would go on to sell a controlling stake in the brand to LVMH in 1999. The Benefit Cosmetics brand is currently sold through its online platform and Benefit Cosmetics Boutiques, as well as through retailers like Sephora, Ulta and Macy's.

Currently led by Chief Executive Officer Jean-André Rougeot, the company's products are distributed in 45 countries. Most recently, Benefit opened its first ever pop-up shop in Los Angeles.
