Key Print Trends from the Catwalks - Fall/Winter 2016-17 (Trendstop)

Published
May 3, 2016

Fresh from the runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris, the Trendstop catwalk team bring you the latest trends manifesting in ready-to-wear for the Fall/Winter 2016-17 season. The Trendstop trend experts follow every new collection to analyze the latest developments and most exciting innovations, distilling this research into our in-depth catwalk reports.
Print is one of the key components of Trendstop’s ready-to-wear catwalk analysis, dissecting every aspect of all-over patterns and graphic placements to pinpoint the exact stylization, motifs and colour usage which ensure successful products. This week, our blog readers can get a first look at three essential trend directions for print from the catwalks, as womenswear patterns evolve with an array of statement all-overs and graphic placements.

Eastern Dreams

Eastern influences continue to come through strongly for Fall/Winter 2016-17, this time on show with a surreal aesthetic for a playful, youthful appeal. Large-scale graphic placements take the form of stylised tigers and fantastical reptiles, while elegant floral or cherry blossom patterning is subverted with stripe mixes or decon-recon surfaces.

Carefree Outlines

Womenswear products become a canvas for creative expression, as linear lines create simple yet striking patterns. Abstract aesthetics inspire a look of continuous line drawing in stark monochrome colourways, while conversationals and repeats are stripped back with fine outlines.

Inspired by Pucci

Inspired by Emilio Pucci’s iconic butterfly motif, womenswear take a contemporary graphic direction for fall. Butterflies are blown up with oversized proportions, creating elegant, curvilinear surfaces that offer a feminine take on blocking. Meanwhile, strong outlines, pop colours and mishmash patterning underline the modern mood.
