Up to 80m unwanted gifts could be re-sold this month

The holiday season is over and Brits have already started re-selling some of the presents they received for Christmas but aren’t quite right for them.

According to Ebay, more than £850 million worth of gifts could be listed for re-sale on its site this year, with fashion accessories expected to be in the list of the most popular items for re-sale in the post-Christmas period.

The online marketplace said more than 9,500 women’s handbags were listed on its page between the 27th and 30th of December in 2016, while women’s shoes listings reached over 9,410. Men’s footwear was also a bestselling category with more than 6,760 listed for re-sale after Christmas 2016.

Data suggest this level could be repeated this season, as a separate survey from Ebay reveals that one in five Brits plan to re-sell their unwanted Christmas gifts to fund their year goals. The average person is expected to spend £511 in January on items including new clothes, DIY, hairstyles and fitness equipment.

Will Weightman, Senior Director, Consumer Selling, Ebay UK said, "The period between Christmas and the New Year is an incredibly busy listings period on the site. Normally at this time of year people are looking for ways to make a bit of extra cash and fund the things they want to do in the new year.”

Other items that are likely to be popular on eBay this month include home décor, women’s fragrances and DVDs and blu-rays.

Ebay welcomes more than 23 million buyers every month and has 168 million buyers globally.
