Ukraine's Paskal enchants Paris with graphic collection

As the opening show of Paris Fashion Week, Julie Paskal launched a delicate and warm collection on Tuesday, the second year the young designer has featured on the French capital's show circuit. Paris is a place that is all the more important to the designer as the Ukrainian has French origins via her maternal great grandfather, who was originally from Rouen.

The collection featured small purple and green flowers made in a reflective fabric, illuminating under the light on houndstooth dresses with sleeves that ballooned. Pleated fabrics in green tones sat superimposed on skirts, playing on volume, while the romanticism of an outfit in white lace was dimmed by an sheer-opaque overcoat in vinyl.

The floral patterns became blurred in the movement of models and graphic pieces came laser cut, a signature of the Paskal brand.

"I worked more on the materials this season, particularly the use of silk and crepe techniques," explains the 27-year-old designer, who is a graduate of architecture and engineering.

"At 20, I decided to take a break and throw myself into fashion, following in the footsteps of my mother. She had her own boutique, which was called Paskal, and she used to make me dresses when I was a little girl," recalls the designer, who is also a mother of three.

Paskale's technique, almost industrial in the way her clothes are made, as well as architectural sensibilities feature in her fresh and modern collections. Since launching her label in 2010, the young designer, based in Ukraine's Odessa, has attracted both buyers and industry professionals -- sponsored by Mercedes-Benz and Vogue Italy, before being selected as a LVMH semi-finalist in 2014.

"I like to see my ideas come to life. In fashion, it's even quicker than architecture," adds Paskal, who today has around 50 retail stockists, including Colette in Paris, Net-A -Porter and Selfridges. The brand is also strongly distributed in Asia.
