New York City nixes Supreme and Louis Vuitton pop-up

A Manhattan community board unanimously struck down the proposed Louis Vuitton and Supreme pop-up shop due to concerns about lack of organization and crowding.

The pop-up shop was set to take place on Manhattan’s Bond Street, between Lafayette and Bowery, to promote the collaboration between the two brands. All 32 members of Manhattans’ Community Board No. 2 voted against the event, citing concerns that those overseeing the event hadn’t adequately prepared for the amount of people that would likely line-up for the event.

The pop-up event was scheduled to take place over two days at the end of June, with a section of Bond Street to be closed for four days in total. Supreme estimated as many as 1,000 people would line up for the event, but the community board said the brand had not laid out any plans for how to manage the large crowd, including failing to provide any bathroom facilities for those waiting in line for hours. The brand had also not outlined how local businesses or residents would access their buildings during the closure.

The community board also cited that Supreme has failed to follow New York City permit requirements in the past, and regularly attracts lines that wrap around the block to its Lafayette Street store.

At the meeting, Manhattan’s Community Board No. 2 also requested that in the future anyone planning an event that could attract long lines present a plan to the board on how to keep the local community unaffected.

Pieces from the Louis Vuitton x Supreme collection were first shown during the Louis Vuitton Men’s Fall 2017 collection. The anticipated collaboration is slated for a July 17 release.
