Kim Kardashian expands emoji empire to retail

Published

Kim Kardashian is expanding her empire. The leader of the Kardashian dynasty announced Monday that she will launch a clothing line to complement her best-selling emoji app.

The aptly name 'Kimoji' app costs $1.99 to download and currently boasts over 40 million downloads. It was widely reported that Kardashian’s app brought her in $200 million.

As reported by the fashion press, Kardashian filed documents this week to open a retail extension of her emoji brand. The ‘Kimoji’ line will include apparel, accessories, and mobile phone cases, all bearing various emojis from Kardashian’s namesake emoji app.

But this isn't Kardashian's first venture into the retail world - she opened DASH boutique in 2006 with her two sisters, with brick-and-mortar locations in New York, LA, and Miami.

Many fashion brands have been looking to emojis as an unconventional way of bringing in profit and promoting their brand. Commes des Garcon launched a $1 app in November to help promote the brand’s PLAY line.

Nike also released an app in November, offering little digitals images of sneakers and Michael Jordan portraits that Nike brand connoisseurs can include in texts. Even Bloomingdales opted for an emoji app to help the department storesrelate to younger consumers, offering an app full of Bloomies-branded emoticons.
