Gucci to launch special capsule collection with Spanish artist Coco Capitán

Published
Jul 6, 2017

Spanish artist Coco Capitán is the latest artist to partner with Gucci. The Italian fashion house announced on Wednesday the launch of collaborative projects with the artist, including a capsule collection and murals in New York City and Milan.

With Alessandro Michele at the helm, Gucci has partnered with several artists on various projects. This year alone, the company tapped illustrator Jayde Fish to create a large-scale mural in New York City, produced a collaborative project with digital artists for #TFWGucci, and partnered with British illustrator Angelina Hicks on a mural and limited-edition t-shirt collaboration.

Gucci’s latest collaborator, Coco Capitán worked with Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele on the A Magazine issue that he curated. Born in Spain in 1992, Coco graduated from the Royal College of Art, has been featured in magazines such as Self Service and Document Journal, and recently published a book, Middle Point Between My House and China.

Capitán’s signature handwritten statements were incorporated in Gucci’s fall 2017 presentation. The artist's handwriting was used for the show invitations and for the entrance of the show space. Michele also ended the show in a t-shirt featuring Capitán’s slogan, “I want to go back to believing a story.”

Michele and Capitán's ongoing partnership led to a collaboration collection that includes t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, knits, coats, belt-bags, backpacks and totes that feature Capitán’s naïve-looking handwritten messages. The unisex collection also feature Gucci’s signature green-red-green Web stripe and gold interlocking ‘GG’ motif.

To celebrate the collection’s launch at select Gucci stores and online at the end of July, Gucci unveiled on Wednesday Capitán’s work on a 2,500-square-foot wall on Lafayette Street in New York City and a large wall at Largo la Foppa in Milan’s Corso Garibaldi district. The New York City wall features the phrase, “What are we going to do with all this future?” and the Milan wall says, “Common sense is not that common.”
