Bol.com ranked largest online store in the Netherlands, Zalando and Wehkamp reach top five

Published

Dutch e-tailer Bol.com is the largest online store in the Netherlands, according to the Twinkle100, a list of the largest online retailers in the Netherlands based on revenue, created by e-commerce trade publication, Twinkle.

Bol.com earned the number one spot for recording 1.2 billion euros in Dutch revenue in 2017. Zalando stood at number three on the list, with a recorded 670 million euros, followed by Wehkamp (570 million euros). Electronics e-tailer Coolblue and grocery store Albert Heijn Online took the second and fifth spots, respectively.

Twinkle said that it is the first time in its 11 editions that a company with more than a billion euros in turnover has been listed on the Twinkle 100. Other notable changes in the 2018 edition was the entry of Zalando's into third place, replacing Wehkamp, and the first entry of Dutch department store de Bijenkorf’s online store into the top 10.

In addition, Twinkle 100 shows that there are 250 online retailers with at least 5 million euros in online turnover in the Netherlands.

Arjan van Oosterhout, editor-in-chief of Twinkle, said: “Interestingly, many online retailers also have one or more physical stores. The high street has found its way to the Internet, but we also see it the other way around. The number of foreign online shops that focus on the Dutch market is increasing, but the largest share of the online market in the Netherlands is in the hands of Dutch e-tailers, very different than for example in Belgium. In [Belgium], Amazon is the market leader, in the Netherlands the company has to tolerate six other [Dutch] players.”

The Twinkle100, published on Thursday, contains an overview of the 250 largest online retailers and the 25 largest online travel retailers in the Netherlands. Together, the 275 companies recorded more than 15.8 billion euros in online revenue in 2017, which is 1,000 euros per capita of the Dutch population, Twinkle said.

The Twinkle100 is a collaboration of Twinkle magazine editors and the Hogeschool van Amsterdam’s Center for Market Insights (Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences).

SimilarWeb, MeasureWorks and Scooperz contributed to the Twinkle100 with data about traffic, performance and social media, respectively.
